Black and Tan Coonhound dogs are good-natured and easygoing hound dogs that are large in size. These dogs with keen sense of smell were primarily used for trailing and treeing raccoon. Apart from hunting, these wonderful dogs are also good at tracking, agility and watchdogging.


The breed was developed by crossing Bloodhound, Black and Tan Foxhound and the now extinct Talbot Hound dog breeds. These dogs are known to have a distinct howl which makes it easy for the owners to identify them. These hard working hunting dogs are also considered as excellent companion dogs.

Physical Appearance

Characterized by a powerful and well proportioned body, the Black and Tan Coonhound dog breed possesses a great deal of stamina. The head is relatively long with a somewhat oval outline of the skull. The eyes are hazel to dark brown in color and round in shape. The long, droopy ears are set low and extent beyond the tip of the nose. The long and strong tail is generally carried freely.

Color: As the name itself indicates, Black and Tan Coonhound breed dogs are characterized by a black and tan color.
Height: Both male as well as female Black and Tan Coonhounds tend to grow to about 23 to 27 inches in height.
Weight: The average weight of the breed ranges between 50 to 75 pounds.

Health Problems

Some common health issues in these dogs are Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Ectropion, Hemophilia B, Hypothyroidism, Ear Infections, Ear Cancer etc. Black and Tan Coonhound breed dogs have a tendency to gain weight. Thus, owners should specifically resist the temptation of feeding their beloved doggies excessively.

Life Expectancy: On an average, Black and Tan Coonhound life expectancy is considered to be 10 to 12 years.


Black and Tan Coonhound temperament is energetic, intelligent, loyal, friendly, outgoing and loving. Generally, these dogs are gentle and friendly with kids but reserved with strangers. They are usually compatible with other pets in the house. However, they need to be carefully supervised in case of smaller pets like cats.
